Our Beautiful Garden

My husband had only been gardening/farming for three years now but he sure is getting it down. This was going to be the year that we would either get corn and plant again next year or throw in the towel and quit trying with the corn all together. So far it looks like it is going to be knee high by 4th of July. It is awfully close right now. If we continue to get a few sunny, warm days like yesterday when he took these pictures, maybe it'll even be past the knees. I love my husband's efforts and the joy he has in his work. Already he is bringing fresh salad greens and mustard greens up the hill. I so much appreciate the wholesome way of eating that the Lord showed us last year.

Those are cantaloupes growing bountifully underneath the plastic over there.

Strawberries - We'll have to get a picture when they turn red. I believe he'll be pulling the plastic sheeting off fairly soon. We eat frozen strawberries from Azure in our yogurt shakes almost daily. It will be a real treat to eat them from our own farm.

Daddy's new hothouse. The only problem with it is it isn't big enough. He'll be expanding it next year.

Tomatoes in the hothouse. He did such a good job in building this little thing. So far it looks like it is really going to give us a harvest this year. Most of the corn, brussel sprouts, watermelon, green peppers and more that are out in the field are transplants from this hothouse.

Beautiful little tomatoes

More salad mix ready to go out to the field or up the hill to mom. Red romaine is delicious. See it in the background?

Such a gorgeous day. We get so few around here, even during the Summer.

Brussel sprouts

Mustard Greens
They are fiery hot but Hannah eats them up like crazy.

Red Romaine Lettuce

Lettuce, cabbage, brussel sprouts and mustard greens

There's an abundance of potatoes and onions in this area here before the lettuce and other vegetables.

My little salad - complete with goat cheese, olive oil and raw apple cider vinegar for the dressing. It doesn't need much.

Home Depot

Daddy took the kids to Home Depot one Saturday to pick up more wood for their tree house he's making. They were giving away free kids work aprons and some little wooden kits for making a carry around box. Matthew is so excited with his new things.

New Dress Style and 25 Weeks Pregnant

These past months the Lord has been leading me towards a new dress style... a little on the prairie style side. Since I cannot find a prairie dress pattern for an adult, I found that the nightgowns are nearly duplicate of a prairie dress. I cut mine apart and made a dress made out of muslin. I put my jumper I made last month over it and found it very much to my liking. It is the most comfortable dress I have ever had. A friend at a church we are praying to move to Missouri to attend is sending me a pattern for a smock and a head covering as well.

The dress I found to be a bit long compared to the jumper so I have since hemmed it up once. I'll be making a corn blue dress next month with the natural muslin pinafore/smock over it. I'll post pictures of that later. It should be an improvement over this one.

Twenty-five weeks pregnant here with baby Miriam. I feel absolutely great most of the day other than back pain from car accidents. Since we've changed our diet so much this past year, I've only gained about 2 pounds, but baby is gaining steadily.

Life is good. Our days are full again.

Knitting - My New Love

It all started 2 months ago with a Knifty Knitter. I bought a small, round one and made a couple of hats. I was so impressed that I just had to try my hand seriously at learning how to knit. I had tried knitting back in 2004 when I was still working and could not get my hands and fingers to work at all. I still had a great desire to learn but felt it was futile. So, when I looked at some videos at knittinghelp.com that a friend had recommended and found that there are actually two ways you could knit, I then knew what my problem had been in the past; I was knitting the wrong way for me. I find the Continental Method that my Norwegian ancestors most likely knitted this way was natural for me. I am right handed and it calls one to work with their right hand. I don't understand why they call it the left handed method... it's anything but left handed. So, if you have struggled and failed and knitting before, give yourself one more try using the Continental method as shown on the website listed above and you may find yourself enjoying life much more as I am myself.

First real project, a sack for our soon to be born Miriam made of baby alpaca yarn. It is ever so soft.

A soft, wool hat. Good practice on circular needles. I then finish the top using the Magic Loop Method. I have used double pointed needles and they do work for me but I prefer the Magic Loop Method so far. I bought 3 new skeins of this Cascade 220 wool for $9 at the Goodwill. I'm still using it for making hats for Winter.

A washcloth for the kids bath, I just finished last night.
I just did random stitches with a little border.

Practice baby blanket. I have some merino wool coming for a baby blanket for baby and wanted to practice lightly with a pattern and border using cotton yarn. I love working and practicing with cotton... it is cheap and I can always use it. I can't stand the feel of acrylic yarn - it feels so unnatural against my skin while trying to knit. I can't wait to try hemp, linen and other natural yarns one day.

Undyed Peruvian wool hat. My husband loves it. I can't wait to make another one with a more manly pattern. Over 400 yards of this yarn is only $15. They have many other beautiful undyed yarns that range from nearly white to ebony black. I love the natural colors.

A washrag for our dishes. Great texture and absorbs wonderfully. I love trying new patterns on dishcloths. I can't wait to replace all of our tan, terrycloth dish cloths with homemade ones like this.

Bloomers

I bought a pattern for bloomers for the girls from http://www.thekingsdaughters.com/. I made them some bloomers from some good, quality muslin and they turned out superb. They are so pretty and feminine looking under their dresses or skirts. I can't wait to make some more.
